AIDS is the disease caused by the HIV virus. The HIV virus spreads by one person coming into contact with the blood of an infected person. The biggest cause of AIDS is sex with an infected person. Another major cause of AIDS is sharing illegal drug tools with an infected person.
Islam, Judaism and Christianity all teach that you should only have sex with your husband or wife. To have sex with a person who is not your husband or wife is a sin. All three religions also teach that using illegal drugs is wrong. If you and your husband or wife follows these religious rules, you should not get AIDS. People who break these religious rules often get AIDS.
Many religious people believe that AIDS is a curse from God on people who break His rules. Because keeping God’s rules about sex and drugs is the best way to prevent AIDS, these religious people do not want to spend money to help people with AIDS. The believe AIDS is God’s punishment for sin.
For some reason, many religious people believe that some sins are worse than other sins. Breaking rules about sex and drugs seems worse to them than sins like lying, cheating, stealing and killing. Perhaps God only punishes people for the really bad sins and leaves other sins without punishment.
In the eyes of God, everyone is a sinner. No person is better than any other person. Everyone needs God’s forgiveness. Jesus healed all kinds of sick people. He did not say that some sins were worse than others. He loves everyone and tells us to love each other too–no matter what sickness people may have.
