Vinnie Price’s Breadsticks

  • 1/4 C. yeast
  • 5 C. warm water
  • 1 C. instant dry milk
  • 1 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1 1/2 C butter flavored Crisco or 1 1/3 C. vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 5 pounds all-purpose flour
  • 2 sticks of butter or margarine
  • Garlic powder

Put yeast in warm water and let stand 3-5 minutes. Add sugar, dry milk, salt, & eggs. If using Crisco, measure and put into water and break into small pieces. If using oil, just add oil. Add flour. Mix thoroughly.

Put onto floured counter and knead. Put into a buttered bowl, cover and let rise until doubled. Melt 2 sticks of butter and set aside. Divide dough in half. Rollout on a floured surface until approximately 5 1/2 feet long and 18 inches wide. Brush with 1/2 of the butter. Sprinkle with garlic powder to your taste. Cut into quarters, then each quarter into 5ths. Pick up each slice, fold in half and twist. Place on buttered pans and let rise again.

If making ahead to freeze: Bake at 350 for 11 minutes. Let cool completely, remove from pan, place in a large ziplock bag and freeze. When ready to use, let thaw on pans, brush with a little more melted butter and bake again for about 10 minutes.

If making to eat right away: Brush with melted butter and bake at 350 for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
